“Sidemount is just tech light.” I hear that one regularly, sometimes as an honest question, sometimes as a finished verdict, and usually it sits at the start of the same conversation that soon arrives at “GUE or TDI?” — as if the point were which of the two agencies is better. Both lines sound reasonable, and both still miss the heart of it.
It took me years to understand that myself, and along the way I accumulated a cupboard full of gear that documents every one of my detours rather neatly. In the end the truth is unspectacular: which organisation is printed on the card decides surprisingly little, and whether you dive sidemount or backmount says nothing about your level. What matters are two other things — the configuration you learn in, and the bar you’re held to.
I teach both routes: GUE Fundamentals in backmount, TDI Intro to Tech in sidemount. In both courses the expected standard is the same I was held to myself in my own training with GUE, with ISE, and later at Protec in Tulum. The standard you hold training to is independent of the agency and the course. The rest of this piece sorts out what separates them, and what doesn’t.
The fine print first
Before we talk taste, a quick look at the plain numbers, because a table doesn’t negotiate. The list of prerequisites for the different paths is like a bouncer who checks your ID and couldn’t care less about your life story.

With GUE this table is flexible: you can enter at any level, work your way up step by step, or, if you meet the prerequisites, go straight into Technical Fundamentals. How you walk the path is up to you —there is always a next step no matter where you start.. TDI Intro to Tech, by contrast, is a single course, and its 25 dives are the minimum to start at all, not the level I’m hoping for. I’d rather have a student who’s already solid in the water column— that’s something to build on, instead of teaching basic skills. It lets me focus on making someone who’s already good even better.
One more word on equipment, because with GUE that’s the part people easily overlook: which configuration is allowed and how much experience in it you need prior to the course, depends on the level..

The doubles and drysuit experience each apply when you actually use that equipment in the course; for Technical Fundamentals doubles are part of the deal. The “primers” are short GUE preparation modules that build the missing experience instead of leaving you standing at the door.
Why I keep the theory in the class room
With GUE the theory now runs through an adaptive online platform, and it’s cleverly done: it adapts to your level, dwells on what you don’t yet know, and lets you work at your own pace until the material genuinely sticks. That saves time and hands it back where it counts, in the water. I think it’s good — and I still prefer to teach entirely in person.
The reason has less to do with you than with me. Park me alone in front of a learning module and within twenty minutes my head is planning the next dive instead of the gas reserve, and what I don’t trust myself to do I won’t impose on a student at the tech entry either. Gas planning, failure scenarios, configuration logic aren’t slides anyway, they’re conversations; they live on someone asking a follow-up, pausing in the right place, and thinking it through together in the room. I can meet you where you currently stand, instead of running a module that’s too much on day one and too little on day three. Anyone who prefers to learn asynchronously is well served by the GUE format; anyone who wants to work the material out in conversation comes to me.
How a course runs with me
What your course will focus is something I learn not from a registration form but through a conversation — and, if it can be arranged, a dive together beforehand. Twenty minutes in the water tell me more about trim, buoyancy, and ingrained habits than any questionnaire. That’s not a test, it’s the start.
TDI sets a minimum duration for Intro to Tech, a few classroom hours and required dives, and I reliably exceed this. In practice it usually becomes four days, simply because I dive a skill until it holds, not until the clock runs out. Handing out a card just because the minimum hours are full would be like a knot that holds as long as no one pulls on it: perfect on dry land, and giving way at the exact moment it matters. The SDI/TDI Code of Ethics says the same thing, only drier — you shouldn’t certify someone who you wouldn’t trust as a buddy for your own loved ones. So with me you pay for the skill, not for the plastic.
Backmount, sidemount, and the question of rigour
I teach GUE Fundamentals in backmount, in the classic doubles; that’s the world the GUE tech path continues in. I teach Intro to Tech in sidemount. One thing stays cleanly separated: GUE doesn’t certify a sidemount course before Cave 2, and my Intro to Tech is and remains a TDI course with a TDI certification. What I bring from GUE’s hard school isn’t a stamp but an attitude — the same rigour in trim, buoyancy, kicks, and procedures that I was trained with, and the same attitude to getting the detail right. The standard lives in the instructor, not on the sticker.
In the water the foundation is the same in both configurations: lying calm and level, moving efficiently, thinking as a team, having your gas under control, and solving problems without drama. What differs is more the how. Backmount is the direct line into the classic GUE tech path with depth and deco; sidemount gives you two independent cylinders, your own access to everything, and a bit more to keep in your head at once, and it plays to its strengths where redundancy, tight spots, and logistics matter. That’s not less system, just a different one — and which one is the right tool for which dive, I’ve taken apart in Backmount or Sidemount – the wrong question).
And after that?
Both courses are doors, not finish lines — and they lead into different rooms.
GUE Technical Fundamentals is the clear entry into the GUE tech path: only with this step and the technical rating do you move on to Tech 1, Tech 2, and the GUE cave world. Without that step, that door stays shut.
TDI Intro to Tech opens a different world. From here the path runs on through Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures — exactly the point where “practising tech diving” turns into real tech diving. If real decompression appeals to you, I teach that too, in the same configuration and to the same standard.
And the path doesn’t end there. The overhead is open to you as well: on through Intro to Cave, Full Cave, and beyond — at a level that has nothing to hide. On the contrary: places like Protec in Tulum show rather impressively how well and how consistently that training can work.
Because I teach Intro to Tech in sidemount from the very first step, you build that foundation right away. No detour, no relearning later.
Intro to Tech, then, isn’t a finished course but a foundation. Decompression is the next logical step — and after that several directions open up: deeper, longer, or simply tighter. What this path does not open is the GUE tech track; for that you still need Technical Fundamentals.
Two beginnings. Two systems. Both lead far — if you walk them cleanly.
Both routes deliver the same standard; they differ in entry barrier, format, and equipment, not in quality. Two routes, one standard — and in both cases you mainly need one thing: time. Not a new harness.
